When registering for an ITJ course, you can select one of following three credit options:
Audit - Educators who audit a course for professional development will have access to all course materials and on-line discussions. Auditors will be expected to complete all assignments and participate in all class activities. When an auditor completes the module successfully they receive a certificate of participation from ITJ.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) - Educators may also register to receive CEUs for successfully completing their course. One CEU is awarded for each 10 hours of contact time involved in a module. Most modules are rated at 20 hours of contact time. The CEUs will be awarded by ITJ through the International Association for Continuing Education and Training.
Upper Level College Credit - Through agreements with different colleges and universities, ITJ will enable participants to earn upper level college credit for successfully completing courses. When agreements are finalized, students will be able to select the institution they want to award the credit. The cost for this option will vary depending on the institution selected and the number of credits involved.
The total tuition for an ITJ module will depend on the credit option selected. Decisions about the tuition levels have not yet been finalized. ITJ wants to make its professional development modules as cost effective as possible. We are also talking with agencies about providing some scholarship assistance for deserving educators.
Educators may register for ITJ courses three ways. The easiest and fastest is to use the on-line registration form found in the Registration section of the ITJ website. A part of this form requires that you enter credit card information (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express). The ITJ webserver provides special security certificates to ensure secure encrypted credit card transactions across the Internet. If you do not wish to send your credit card information via the Internet, you may register via a FAX form that you can print from the website, complete, and then FAX to ITJ. Finally, you may also register over the phone by calling 1-800-300-8983 or by mail. If you register by mail, complete and print the FAX registration form from the website and send it to ITJ along with either your credit card information or a check. Completed forms should be mailed to: The Institute for the Teaching of Japanese (TLI); P.O. Box 166; Atlanta, IL 61723.
It is best if students complete all required coursework by the end of the module. If circumstances prevent students from finishing required work within the period of the module, students may request an extension. In the majority of cases, students will be given the time needed to successfully complete their modules. However, during an extension, students will have limited access to the learning facilitator and will not have the advantage of working on course material with other students. There is a $20 administrative fee for all extensions and there is a ninety-day time limit for each extension.
Students can cancel their registration without penalty if the request is received within 30 days of the start of the module. Requests for cancellation can be maid by e-mail or over the phone by calling 1-217-648-2353 (ask for the ITJ registration desk). When contacting ITJ to cancel a course, provide the course name and number and your name, social security number, or special "security" number. Requests for course cancellation that do not include the "security" number will not be processed.
If a student cancels a course after the 30 day no-penalty time but before the course begins, there will be a $10 administrative fee subtracted from the refunded tuition. If the course is canceled within the first week of the module, only 50% (fifty percent) of the tuition will be refunded. If the course is canceled after the first week of the module no refund of tuition will be made.
Transcripts are available two weeks after course completion, and may be ordered using a transcript request form. One transcript will be provided free of charge after each completed course and will include information on all ITJ courses that a student has completed. Students may also request that ITJ send transcripts on their behalf to other institutions. There will be a $10 administrative fee for this service.
ITJ expects that all participants will interact with the learning facilitator and students in a professional and respectful manner. We encourage participants to be open and candid when sharing their ideas and responses to class assignments. Rude, abusive, or foul language will not be tolerated and will be grounds for expulsion from ITJ without any benefit of a refund.
Students enrolled in an ITJ course will receive technical support on problems they may experience with accessing different features of ITJ's modules or the website. It is not possible for ITJ staff to provide general technical assistance about using computers or non-ITJ software. The best way to receive technical support is to complete and submit the technical support request form. In emergency situations, registered students may call 1-217-648-2353 to request technical support. Telephone support is available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Standard time.
