The Institute for the Teaching of Japanese website has been designed to be accessible by most common browser programs. Several key resources can only be accessed by frame-enabled browsers such as Netscape Navigator versions 2.01 or more recent and Microsoft Internet Explore 3.02 or more recent. If you are using an earlier version of either of these two browsers, we recommend that you upgrade to a later version by visiting Netscape's or Microsoft's website.

ITJ classes can be accessed with any Java-enabled browser such as Netscape Navigator versions 2.01 or greater and Microsoft Internet Explore 3.02. It is also important that the Java script capabilities of your browser be turn on.

For Netscape Navigator, you can check to see if the Java capabilities of your browser are turned on or not by doing the following:

  1. With the browser window open, select the "Options" menu item and select "Network Preferences" from the menu.
  2. Next, select the "Languages" tab to open a new window.
  3. The two boxes next to the terms "Enable Java" and "Enable JavaScript" should be checked.
  4. If they are, Java is working and you may select "OK" and return to using the website.
  5. If these two boxes are not checked, please select in each box to insert an "X" in the box. Next select ""OK"" to return to the normal browser window.
  6. If you are activating the Java functions for the first time, you will need to select the "File" menu item and select "Quit". After this, you will need to start the browser again. It is not necessary to disconnect from your Internet service provider to start your browser again.

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can check to see if the Java capabilities of your browser are turned on by doing the following:

  1. With the browser window open, select the "View" menu item and select "Options" from the menu that is now displayed.
  2. Next, select the "Security" tab to open a new window.
  3. A series of four small boxes in the lower portion of this window, under "Active Content" should all be checked.
  4. If they are, Java is working and you may select "OK" and return to using the website.
  5. If these four boxes are not checked, please select in each box to insert an "X" in the box. Next select ""OK"" to return to the normal browser window.
  6. If you are activating Java functions for the first time, you will now need to select the "File" menu item and select "Close". After this you will need to start the browser again. It is not necessary to disconnect from your Internet service provider to start your browser again.
